Artist Statement

experimenting with sound originated from experiencing it initially as a source of ritual, of praise — a direct connect with God. though the traditional studies of instrumentation played a role in the development as a musician, it was the black worship music in the deep south, the improvisational sounds of resistance, struggle and love, (also known as jazz) paired with the discovery of House music that has transformed the sounds of my heart.

Blu Moon was a name that surfaced while inquiring about who the paternal great-great grandmother of B Dukes was in the physical along with currently deepening the connection in the spiritual. The essence of her wisdom, grace, love and power runs through their veins and the work that they produce. From My Father’s Eyes opens the floodgates of their most recent exploratory journey of self as they interview their father on their musical upbringing and time spent with their great-great grandmother Annie Dozier. As his voice drifts over the floetry of sharp high hats and deep kicks, a clearer image of my roots is displayed.

Created and expressing through the various modalities centered in music has been within since I can remember. Mimicking rhythms heard by my older brother who was the drumline captain, it was almost a natural form of communicating. After years of taking a step back and process the journey of sonic creations, Blu Moon is surfacing in full force. Introducing the world to their complex, earthy and melodic inner visions with improvisational, arpeggiated, hypnotic, electronic, rhythmic and ambient explorations. A unique genre of it’s own — dancing in between the lines of house, jazz, gospel, world and r&B. Releasing their debut EP “Open Waters” on Bandcamp and coming soon to streaming platforms. Opening with an interview with their father explaining the source of their love bond through jazz music and blessings of being the last great grandchild of their late Big Ma. In addition to this expanded practice Blu Moon is anchoring in their creative healing practice by generating transformative experiences by infusing archaic and indigenous instrumentation with electronic and poetry / chants to produce sound baths. In collaboration with their bandmate KKINGBOO, the two conjure portals while incorporating the magic of local Black and Brown Queer and Trans artists in their creations.

— connecting sounds to catch the spirit. When spinning on the decks as a DJ, Blu Moon reaches in the depths of the soul for hypnotizing arpeggios, captivating hand drums and breaks that initiate stank faces and electrifying grooves. House music and amapiano was the source of love and passion for the art of sharing music after years of playing around due to proximity to the industry. Discovering the genre that Black folks in the warehouses of Chicago generated from a space of love, liberation and unity — truly changed my life. Currently Blu Moon is exploring the historic records of House music that keeps the OGs continuously committed to the sound and those upholding the soul of the House.

At the core Blu Moon is a lover of experimenting, collaborative improv and spirit filled heart music.
